JOHN REID, Private S/16337, 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, is NOT named on the Larkhall War Memorial. He is listed on Dalserf War Memorial, Ashgillhead, Ashgill.

 

JOHN REID was born at Ayr Road Railway Station, Shawsburn, Parish of Dalserf, on 16th May, 1895.

 

His parents were Abraham Reid, a Railway Station Master, and Elizabeth Cook Reid, who were married at 116 George Street, Glasgow, on 14th March, 1884.
His paternal grandparents were Thomas Reid, a Coal Miner, and Jane Reid.
His maternal grandparents were John Reid, Superintendent of Police, and Mary Haining.

 

The 1901 DALSERF Census was taken on 31st March, 1901.
The family are listed at Station House, Shawsburn, Parish of Dalserf, as follows:
Abraham Reid, age 42, Head, Railway Station Master, b Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Elizabeth Cook Reid, age 38, Wife, b Tynron, Dumfries.
Mary Haining Reid, age 16, Daughter, Scholar, b Glasgow.
Thomas Moffat Reid, age 13, Son, Junior Clerk, b Glasgow.
Jean Reid, age 8, Daughter, b Cathcart.
JOHN REID, age 5, Son, Scholar, b Dalserf.

 

The 1911 DALSERF Census was taken on 2nd April, 1911.
The family are listed at Ayr Road station, Shawsburn, Parish of Dalserf, as follows:
Abraham Reid, age 52, Head, Railway Station Master, b Dalkeith, Midlothian.
Elizabeth Cook Reid, age 48, Wife, b Tynron, Dumfries.
Mary Reid, age 26, Daughter, School Mistress, b Glasgow.
Thomas Reid, age 23, Son, Commercial Traveller, b Glasgow.
Jeanie Reid, age 18, Daughter, b Cathcart.
JOHN REID, age 15, Son, Number Taker, b Dalserf.

 

JOHN REID joined the 2nd Battalion, Cameron Highlanders, as Private S/16337, and went to France on 23rd March, 1915.

 

JOHN REID was Killed-In-Action on 10th May, 1915, age 19.

 

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for JOHN REID shows that he is commemorated at YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. There are 54,603 identified casualties listed on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

 

JOHN REID is commemorated at The Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) in Edinburgh Castle.

 

The entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) shows that JOHN REID was born at Dalserf, lived in Larkhall, and enlisted in Glasgow.

 

The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for JOHN REID shows that he was awarded The 1914-15 Star Medal, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal. The MIC is dated 23rd March, 1915, and shows that he went to France on that date.

 

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his father Abraham received his Outstanding Pay of £6/13/7, and a War Gratuity of £3/-/-.

 

A newspaper clipping taken from The Sunday Post, page 4, dated 28th May, 1916, reads:
"FOUR LARKHALL LADS FALL AT THE FRONT.
Larkhall, Sunday.
Some idea of the part the sons of Larkhall are taking in the world's war may be gathered from the fact that during the week no less than four casualties have come to hand.

Private John Reid, of the Cameron Highlanders, who was only nineteen years of age, and who was reported missing, has now been officially reported killed. He was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Reid, Dalserf Station House, Larkhall".

 

His mother, Elizabeth Cook Reid, died on 4th February, 1935.
His father, Abraham Reid, died on 5th March, 1940.

 

JOHN REID is named on the family gravestone in Larkhall Cemetery.
