He is named on his mother's gravestone in Larkhall Cemetery.

 

JOHN HENDERSON was born at Vicarland, Kirkhill, Cambuslang, on 29th July, 1891.

 

His parents were James Henderson, a Cooper's Journeyman and a widower, and Margaret Eadie, who were married at Kirkhill, Cambuslang on 15th June, 1888.
His paternal grandparents were John Henderson, a Miller's Lademan, and Marion Bird.
His maternal grandparents were David Eadie, a Joiner, and Agnes Bell.

 

The 1891 RUTHERGLEN Census was taken on 5th April, 1891.
The family are listed at Wellshot Place, Rutherglen, as follows:
James Henderson, age 30, Head, a Cooper, b Dalmeny, Linlithgow.
Margaret Henderson, age 25, Wife, b Shettleston.

 

His mother Margaret Eadie or Henderson, age 36, of Vicarland, Kirkhill, Cambuslang, re-married.
On 16th October, 1899, she married William Miller, age 40, a Coal Miner and Widower, of 35 London Street, Larkhall, at Vicarland, Kirkhill, Cambuslang.

 

I am unable to find the death record of his father James Henderson.

 

Similarly, I am unable to find the 1901 Census record of his mother Margaret and step-father William Millar.

 

In the 1911 HAMILTON Census, taken on 2 April, 1911, I found JOHN HENDERSON.
He is listed as a Boarder at 23 Allan Place, Baillie's Causeway, Hamilton, as follows:
JOHN HENDERSON, age 19, Boarder, Coal Miner, b Cambuslang.

 

On 20th June, 1913, JOHN HENDERSON, age 21, a Coal Miner, of 2 Ulva Place, Blantyre, married Elizabeth McLaren Dow, age 22, a Millworker of 5 Middle Craigs, Stirling, at 6 Royal Gardens, Stirling.

 

A son, John Dow Henderson, was born on 30th January, 1915, at 4 Ulva Place, Blantyre.

 

JOHN HENDERSON joined the 1st Bn Scots Guards as Pte 13394, and went to France on 4th October, 1915.

 

JOHN HENDERSON was Killed-In-Action on 30th July, 1917, age 26.

 

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for JOHN HENDERSON shows that he is commemorated at YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Belgium.

The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for JOHN HENDERSON shows that he was awarded The 1914-15 Star Medal, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal.

 

The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his widow Elizabeth received his Outstanding Pay of £5/4/3 and a War Gratuity of £11/-/-.

 

His Soldier's Will, dated 1st March, 1917, shows that he bequeathed his property to his wife Mrs Elizabeth Henderson, 4 Ulva Place, Blantyre.

 

William Miller, age 73, of 103 McNeil Street, Larkhall, died on 18th December, 1931. The cause of his death was Pernicious Anaemia. His death was reported by his son James Miller, of 2 Marshall Street, Larkhall.

 

His mother, Margaret Eadie or Henderson or Miller, age 88, died at No 8 Holding, West Millishear Road, Maryhill, Glasgow, on 20th June, 1954. The cause of death was Cardiovascular Degeneration. Her death was reported by her son James Miller, 9 Dingwall Street, Glasgow.

 

A newspaper clipping taken from The Hamilton Advertiser, page 1, dated 25th August, 1917, reads:
"ON SERVICE
HENDERSON - Killed in action, on 30th July, 1917, Lce. Corporal John Henderson, Scots Guards, aged 26 years, beloved husband of Elizabeth Dow Henderson, 4 Ulva Place, Blantyre.
'Oh! how hard it was we had to part,
From one we dearly loved,
But there's a thought that charms our heart,
That we shall meet above.'
Inserted by his loving wife.
Mrs HENDERSON desires to return sincere thanks to her many friends for kind expressions of sympathy received in her sad bereavement".
