DAVID DICK joined the 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders, as Private S/9233, and went to France on 27 Oct 1915.
DAVID DICK Died of Wounds on 8 Jul 1916, age 21.
The War Diary of the 7th Battalion, Seaforth Highlanders for 8 Jul 1916 reads:
"5pm Battalion moved from BILLON WOOD Valley to the trenches just N.E. of CARNOY Village. 2 Coys in former “No Man’s Land” and 2 Coys in original BRITISH Trenches. ARGYLLS in front of Battalion hold
new front line.
Battalion equipped as when marching from VAUX SUR SOMMES, whence packs were sent to CORBIE to be stored with guard of one man – viz waterproof sheet under flap of haversack, greatcoats rolled, 2
smoke helmets, steel helmet, 2 Mill’s bombs per man in pockets & 220 rounds S.A.A. (bombs & extra ammunition issued in GROVE TOWN). Haversack worn on back, with yellow patch sewn on, &
Coys have a coloured patch on each shoulder in addition (red, yellow, dark blue & light blue).
Casualties – 5 O.R. Wounded on R.E. working parties & 3 Officers wounded 2/Lts A.G. RAE, R. WHYTE & H.T. MELVILLE.".
I assume that DAVID was one of the Casualties on a working party with the Royal Engineers.
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) entry for DAVID DICK shows that he is buried at CARNOY MILITARY CEMETERY, France.
DAVID is commemorated at The Scottish National War Memorial (SNWM) in Edinburgh Castle.
The entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War (SDGW) shows that DAVID enlisted in Hamilton.
The Medal Rolls Index Card (MIC) for DAVID shows that he was awarded:
The 1914-15 Star Medal, The Victory Medal and The British War Medal.
The MIC is dated 27 Oct 1915 and shows that he arrived in France on that date.
The "Soldier's Effects" record shows that his father Charles received his Outstanding Pay of £2/11/5 and a War Gratuity of £3/10/-.
A clipping from The Hamilton Advertiser dated 2 Aug 1916, reads:
"WAR VICTIMS
<snip>
Mr and Mrs Charles Dick, 6 Swinhill, Larkhall, have received official notice that their son, Private David Dick, was killed on the 8th July. He was 21 years of age, and enlisted in July last year. He
was previously employed at Swinhill Colliery.
<snip>".
A Dependant's Pension Record Card and Pension Address Card shows that his mother was living at 6 Old Rows, Swinhill, By Larkhall.
His father Charles Dick, age 52, died on 13 Mar 1921 at 6 Swinhill, Parish of Dalserf. His death was reported by his brother Willian of 40 New Street, Stonehouse.
His mother Jane Smith or Dick, age 55, died on 23 Nov 1923 at 6 Swinhill, Parish of Dalserf. Her death was reported by her son William.
